Igor Gavrilov was born in Moscow. He graduated from the journalism faculty of Moscow State University. As a student he was invited to the best journal of the Soviet Union "Ogoniok", in which he worked for 16 years.
In 1987, in the hundred best photographers of the world, Gavrilov took part in the project "A day in the life of the USSR".
